Review: Willie christens ACL Live
By Ed Crowell | Monday, February 14, 2011, 11:36 AM
"The sound was perfect Sunday. Every instrument could be heard in crisp, clear tones, from the violins to Nelson’s rapid-fire turns on his old acoustic guitar. (The much-repaired Trigger never looked so worn as it did in these shiny surroundings.)"

“Most importantly, the sound was absolutely impeccable, best exemplified by the opening set with the orchestra, where every plucked and bowed string could be heard. I would imagine once word begins to circulate among musicians and their representatives, ACL Live will become a preferred Austin venue for touring bands, as it has a unique combination of space, sound design, location and comfort. And while thousands of musicians will file through the doors, over the next few decades, none will own the room and the hearts of the audience as Willie did Sunday night.”

“Conforming to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification, the $40 million facility has raised the bar for decades to come. It's basically a 2,750-capacity recording studio with custom sound helmed by Nashville's Steven Durr Designs and huge soundproof doors that seal off the main hall. A remote-controlled camera glides beneath the mezzanine level, while the backstage recording studio and in-house video editing room resemble NASA's launch room. "Eventually I could see bands streaming their shows live, or [this] becoming a destination for live CD/DVD packages," noted Neece, almost giddy at the prospect.”
