“I feel like the room is listening to me. It gives me just enough back to be happy, but when I dig in and play loud, it doesn’t pile on or get boomy. It just gives me what I need to feel good”

- Tom MERRIGAN Hot Raccoons

"I don’t know how they do it, but they do it, and that’s why we used Bose,” says Steven Durr, Principal at Steven Durr Designs, a Nashville-based acoustical design consultancy whose portfolio includes sound systems for major sports venues such as the Cleveland Browns Stadium and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Paul Brown Stadium, and music venues such as the Austin City Limits Performance Theatre and the acclaimed Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Durr took that a step further at the Madera Cafe, one of the Plaza's restaurants, installing some vintage "Voice of the Theatre" speakers in such a way that they can be heard both at the bar and the restaurant's small patio.  "Sometimes you have to dig to find the right speakers for each room."

Zac Brown Band founding member, John Driskell Hopkins, came to us with a vision of grandeur - turn his 2000+ sq ft unfinished attic into what is now Brighter Shade studios. The end result truly speaks for itself, we couldn't be more proud of everyone involved and how smooth the process was.

Battery Lane Music | Mix Magazine & TEC nominee 2020
Located Just a few miles from Music Row is a hidden gem, Battery Lane Music, with all the power of a commercial studio while retaining the charm of an artist retreat. Rather than having a studio that dictated production a style, owner/producer/writer Scott Gerow wanted a flexible, hybrid space that would adapt to any production and any artist. Featuring a tracking room to fit a band or a 20-plus piece string session, Battery Lane Music overlooks acres of land secluded in urban Nashville.

Soultrain was a unique and challenging project, as it included the redesign of the iconic Scruggs Sound studio in Berry Hill. Owner Johnny Reid kept as much of the original footprint as possible, as he prefers to record with all of the players in the same room, playing off each other. However, the facility has a new modern interior design and custom DMX lighting. The tracking room, iso booth and control room have clear sight lines, while equipment upgrades brought the studio up to the state of the art...

Mix Class of 2021| Mix Magazine
Considered Nashville’s first home studio, this facility dates back to the mid-1970s when engineer/producer Cowboy Jack Clement was working with artists such as Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Townes Van Zandt, and many others. In 2011, a fire broke out in the house, burning down the legendary engineer/producer’s clubhouse for singer/songwriters. The following year, Mark Howard redesigned and rebuilt the studio, enlarging the cutting room, and then in 2018 Cousin Bob Clement purchased...

2021 Elevation Studios Aims to Raise Bar for Tour Rehearsals | Mix Online
Nashville, TN (July 9, 2021)—With the pandemic finally in decline, live music and events are coming back in a big way. Live Nation has already booked twice as many shows for 2022 as it did in 2019, and many industry watchers expect that kind of demand for concerts to spill forward into the coming years. That’s just fine with artists and production pros, however; they’re ready to get back to work and pack audiences into arenas around the world—and that’s a problem...

Steven Durr Designs exercised great care to restore The Church studio, honoring its historical significance as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Such a prized designation came with specific challenges due to stringent requirements to maintain the more than 100-year-old building’s design intent and 1970s studio aesthetics, while renovating and updating the facility to be relevant for today’s...

Austin PBS featured in Texas Society of Architects The Voice of Texas Architecture
When I was growing up as an only child in suburban Oklahoma, our PBS affliate was a fixture in our home. My parents and I would kick on the TV and tune into Rick Steves, Lawrence Welk, and Oklahoma Gardening with staid devotion. Before smartphones and household internet, PBS helped me access the world beyond my cul de sac. And PBS gave me the first taste of my future home late on Saturday nights, a little bit after...
