THE BACKYARD
Barry Zito, Nashville, TN
overview
The Backyard is truly a studio to take you to another place in time. Settling down after a very successful baseball career that included a Cy Young Award and World Series Championship, singer/songwriter Barry Zito wanted his space to inspire by means of transporting everyone that walked through the door to a different decade. Through initial design conversations, it was clear that simple acoustic treatments weren't going to accomplish that, so SDD got to know Barry and his visions.
The space is roughly a 25' x 30' room with a shag carpet covered rear platform lounge area and a faux stone facade iso booth in the corner. Even though it's open, specific areas of the room have different functions to break up the space. There is a piano area, a drum area, a synth workstation, the back platform, and the mix station. Sitting under the custom shaped cloud are PMC monitors which fill the room beautifully. The remaining bass traps and paneling compliment the natural architecture and acoustics of the room.
A personal studio needs to reflect the end user, in this case, the owner. Barry was very involved in the finish level aspects to dial in the vibe. Working with his team throughout construction, SDD ensured the sound of the studio lived up to that feel. In the current modern climate of acoustics and audio, the Backyard is a throwback that is so uniquely beautiful, it's hard to leave. Barry's studio was selected to Mix Magazine's Class of 2020.
